Issue
An error message displays, stating that a feature of file is unavailable and instructs you to insert a CD. The error contains a file name ending in "msi." These errors can occur while Windows is starting up, or when you open a particular program.
Examples of these error messages include:
  • The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.
  • The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'SolutionCenter.msi' in the box below.
  • The path 'c:hp\tmp\src\aio\Setup\TrayApp.msi' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to the installation package 'TrayApp.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product TrayApp.
If you get an the 'hpqgpc01.exe ' error message, go to "hpqgpc01.exe" Error Message Appears when Attempting to Shut Down the Computer (c01973609) (in English) or your solution.
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
NOTE:If the following solutions do not resolve the issue, you can try the workaround at the end of this document.
Solution one: Install the missing file
Use one of the following methods to install the missing file as indicated by the error message.
Method one: Install the missing file from the CD
If you have the software CD that shipped with your product, follow these steps to install the missing file. If you do not have the CD, skip to the next method.
  1. Insert the HP software CD in the computer CD drive.
  2. If the HP installation screen opens, click Exit to cancel the installer.
  3. Open Windows Explorer:
    • Windows XP or 2000: Right-click Start , and then click Explore .
    • Windows Vista and Windows 7: Right-click the Windows icon ( ), and then click Explore .
    Windows Explorer opens in a new window.
  4. In the Folders pane, navigate to the CD drive on your computer.
  5. Click the plus sign ( ) next to the CD drive to expand the list.
  6. Click the plus sign ( ) next to Setup folder.
  7. Click the folder that corresponds to the file name in the error message. For example, if your error message contains hpproductassistant.msi , click the hpproductassistant folder.
  8. In the right pane of the Windows Explorer window, double-click the msi file icon ( ) associated with the error message. For example, if your error message contains solutioncenter.msi , double-click the solutioncenter.msi file. The Windows Installer window opens and installs the missing file.
Method two: Download and install the missing file from the HP Web site
If you do not have the software CD that shipped with your product, follow these steps to install the missing file.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Turn the product on.
  3. Browse to Get Software and Drivers page: Get software and drivers .
  4. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
  5. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver . A list of drivers for your product displays.
  6. Click Full Feature Software and Drivers .
  7. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  8. Click Download . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
  9. When the File Download window opens, click Save .
  10. In the Save As window, select Desktop .
  11. At the top of the Save As window, click the Create New Folder icon ( ) to create a new folder on the Desktop.
  12. Name the folder with a meaningful title such as 'HP Driver,' press Enter , and then double-click the new folder to open it.
  13. Click Save . The File Download window opens and shows the progress of the download.
  14. When the download completes, click Open Folder .
  15. Double-click the .exe file in the new folder, and then click Run . Wait while the file extracts.
  16. When the HP installation screen opens, click Exit to cancel the installer.
  17. Open the Run dialog box:
    • Windows XP or 2000: Click Start , and then click Run .
    • Windows Vista and Windows 7: Click the Windows icon ( ), type Run in the Search box, and then press Enter .
    The Run dialog box opens in a new window.
  18. In the Open text box, type %temp% , and then press Enter . The Temp folder opens in a new window.
    If the Temp folder displays in a one-pane view, click View , click Explorer Bar , and then click Folders to display the two-pane view.
  19. In the left pane, click the plus sign ( ) next to the folder that begins with 7sXXX or 7sXXX.tmp (the XXX values vary).
    NOTE:There might be more than one 7sXXX folder in the Temp folder on your computer. You might have to search through each of these folders until you find the associated file.
  20. Click the folder that corresponds to the file name in the error message. For example, if your error message contains hpproductassistant.msi , click the hpproductassistant folder.
    NOTE:If you cannot find the associated msi file, look for another 7sXXX and search again.
  21. Double-click the msi file icon ( ) associated with the error message. For example, if your error message contains solutioncenter.msi , double-click the solutioncenter.msi file. The Windows Installer window opens and installs the missing file.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Workaround
If the preceding solutions did not resolve the error, you can remove the HP software, and then reinstall the basic version of the software. With this workaround, you install the print driver without extras, such as HP Product Assistant.
Step one: Uninstall the HP software
  1. Unplug the USB cable connecting the product to the computer.
  2. Open the Windows Control Panel .
    • Windows Vista and Windows 7: On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( ), and then click Control Panel .
    • Windows XP, click Start , and then click Control Panel .
    • Windows 2000: Click Start , click Settings , and then click Control Panel .
    The Control Panel window opens.
  3. Open the list of installed programs and remove the software.
    • Windows Vista and Windows 7: Click Programs . In the list of installed programs, click the HP product, and then click Uninstall .
    • Windows XP or 2000: Double-click Add/Remove Programs . In the list of installed programs, click the HP product, and then click Add/Remove .
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
    NOTE:If asked to remove shared files, click No . Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the files.
Step two: Install the basic software
Use one of the following methods to install the basic version of the HP software.
Method one: Install the basic software with the product CD
Follow these steps to install the software with the product CD. If you no longer have the product CD, see the next method to download and install the software.
CAUTION:Do not connect the USB cable until prompted to do so during software installation. HP recommends using a USB cable that is less than 3 m (10 feet) long.
NOTE:If you get any firewall messages during installation, click continue , unblock , yes , allow , or permit . Otherwise the software installation fails.
  1. Insert the software CD into the CD drive of the computer. The software installer starts automatically.
    NOTE:If the User Account Control screen opens, click Allow to continue.
    If the Install Wizard does not open automatically, follow these steps to open it:
    • Windows XP or 2000: Click Start , click My Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
    • Windows Vista and Windows 7: Click the Windows icon ( ), click Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions until you receive a prompt to select an installation type. Select the basic option, which might be Custom , Express , or Advanced .
  3. When the Install Wizard prompts you to select the programs to install with the product, select the following options, and then uncheck all others:
    • HP Product Driver (the exact name of the driver varies by HP Product)
    • HP Imaging Device Functions
    • HP Solution Center (optional; if your error message relates to hpsolutioncenter.msi, do not select this file)
    • Any other desired files
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the basic-software installation.
Method two: Download and install the basic software from the Web
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Turn the product on.
  3. Browse to Get Software and Drivers page: Get software and drivers .
  4. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
  5. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver . A list of drivers for your product displays.
  6. Click Full Feature Software and Drivers .
  7. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.

  11. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the basic-software installation.
Cause
These errors happen because a software package did not complete installation, or is trying to repair a missing file or a removed registry entry.
To help prevent these errors, make sure that registry-cleaning tools and spyware-removal tools do not remove files and registry entries associated with HP software. Instead, if you want to remove a particular HP software title, remove it using Windows uninstaller.
